Do you know Mr. Alvin Toffler?
He is an author of a very famous book, "The Third Wave", and is called a futurologist.
It was first time for me to hear that word, futurologist, but now I'm one of fanatics of the futurology.
What is the futurology?
Wikipedia says as the followings.
Futures studies (also called futurology) is the study of postulating possible, probable, and preferable futures and the worldviews and myths that underlie them.Sounds cool, doesn't it?
Learn the past, present, and think about future. A repetition of this process is the futurology.
To become a futurologist, I'm thinking we need to learn what is happening in each local community or individual in addition to studying about past and present situations.
●Small changes in local communities and individuals
We will never know the small changes if you keep looking at huge main streams in a macro scale. I really thought so when I joined an event at a new open-space cafe. There were many people feeling a gradual change in years on fields focused by each.
However, now we tend to see one trend by using quantitative analyses on Social media or whatever called "Big Data".
The quantitative analysis focuses on a majority as you know. Social media analysis will never find a new wave, just find what so-called followers are doing. In other words, futurologist doesn't care big pieces. They are keen to find small movements starting at edges.
●Opinions
Here I'm writing about my opinions/what I heard and agreed to as a amateur futurologist.
Now this world has been separated two parts completely. The one is globalization as you know, which is consisted of conventional businesses based on mass production and mass consumption. The other is a life focusing either communities or individuals based on small production and small consumption.
Globalizing business has been basically exploiting economies of scale, exploiting low-waged labors and very cheap materials, and keeping finding a new frontier where is a untapped place. It is very similar to slash-and-burn-shifting-cultivation and it wouldn't last forever because there is no frontier at all. This estimated future must push us to bring innovations, but still I can't personally image our future with this conventional model.
Let's move to stories about community life.
For instance, some people has started to try to reactivate their home towns as you know.
As for electricity, Europe and Japan has been changing the model centralized to a new one distributed to local areas.
Next, let me write about movement to a individual-based life. The point is a prosumption, production by consumers. In the past, prosumption was connected to a so-called self-service, e.g., McDonald where consumers need to take a dish to a table by themselves. We can say this as a conventional prosumption. The next stage came. It can be described with WEB2.0, user-generated contents on the internet. It is getting easier day by day to make something. This direction must keep going ahead.
●To be a futurologist-like businessman
Once you start thinking how this world is going, you could realize that knowledge on various sort of fields would be integrated. The integrated knowledge is literacy, a very important basement of futurology.
I believe this attitude and a future predicted lead my work to a more exciting and valuable one. I want to apply futurology to businesses.
Study many topics in a cross-sectoral manner, and at the same time, pay attention to small changes.
Never give up. Not spend time to boring works for short-term profits. Keep my face up, keep my eyesight up, and see possible, probable, and preferable future.
